2011-2012 Teaching and Learning grants
- Look What I Did-Shelly Oliver a First grade teacher at PSJES wrote this grant to provide reading centers her first grade classroom. This grant will provide Magnetic Make –A –Word Kits, Sentence Building Dominoes, Books and other reading manipulatives.
- Real Reading, Real Results- Serena Mirabella wrote this grant to provide Scholastic Scope magazine for the entire 6th grade student population at PSJES.
- A Digital Twist on Classic Literature – This grant written by Cindy Phillips will provide 25 Kindle e-readers that will be used to download Classic Literature, with the goal of improving reading achievement in 5th in her 5th grade classroom.
- The Planet Janitor Project- This grant written by Cindy Phillips will begin a recycling program throughout PSJES. All classrooms will be equipped with recycling bins, exposing the entire school to the importance of caring for the environment.
- Oysters and Turtles and Bears, On My!, a grant written by Janice Adkison provides the funding for every 4th grade student at PSJES to visit The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Center in Eastpoint.
- Poetry Alive! – Donna Thompson wrote this grant to provide 2 days of performances by the Poetry troupe, 1 day in Port St. Joe, and 1 day in Wewahitchka.
- Involve me and I Understand- This grant written by Carmel Dodson provides the Stop to think comprehension Program, and other reading manipulatives for her 3rd grade classroom.
- Reading is Revolutionary- This grant written by Rhonda Pridgeon improves the intensive reading classroom libraries at PSJES and WES.
- Technology in the Classroom- this grant written by Genevieve Baughman provides Kuta Software for her Algebra students at WHS.
- The Guarantee of an Education-This grant written by Shirley Moates will provide 2 Apple I-Pads for her special needs students at WHS.
- Reading Key –The Key to Success- Linda Husband wrote this grant to purchase the Reading Key program to aid her students at WES in reading proficiency.
- Intermediate Technology: Learning to Implement the Equipment- This grant written by Shirley Thompson provides for the Techno Kids Intermediate Computer Curriculum at PSJ JR High School which will enable her students to master new computer skills.
- Seeing Through the Lens of Compassion- This grant will provide Digital Cameras for Beckie Fulcher’s Art Classes at PSJ JR/SR High School. Students will be able to learn about photography and complete projects with the new cameras.
- Oil Spill- Beckie Fulcher, the new Art Teacher at PSJ JR/SR High School wrote this grant to provide needed Art supplies and Art equipment for her students.
2010-2011 Teaching and Learning Grants
Teaching Supplies
- I can Read This: Shelly Oliver, a teacher at PSJES receivedGrant funding to create a listening library that will help 1st graders with phrasing and fluency. The grant also provides for writing tools to help students recall, retell and write their own stories.
- School is Fun-Let’s Play: Julie Hodges, a teacher at PSJES is using this grant to provide reading materials for high achieving students that fit their level of reading ability. This grant also provides reading materials for lower achieving students that are more engaging, and FUN tools to develop better connections to math concepts. All materials are non-consumable and can be shared with other teachers, as well as after school tutoring.
- Read it once again: Joni Mock, a teacher at PSJES wrote this grant to purchase "Read it Once Again”, an early literacy based foundation for the development of basic skills, including cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, speech/language, adaptive skills, and socialization. This program engages students with familiar children's literature and captures the fun of using rhyme, rhythm, and repetition as a tool for promoting language and success.
- Interactive iBooks: Karen Minger, the media center specialist and Donna Thompson, a reading specialist at PSJES wrote this grant with the goal of immersing the struggling readers in multiple literacy experiences using a variety of media to engage the learner and excite them about working on improving reading skills. This grant provided funding for the purchase of a large collection of iBooks that can be used with each teacher’s smart boards and ELMO projectors. The I-books will be shared with all of the teachers at PSJES.
- Keeping it Current-Serena Mirabella of PSJMS wrote this grant to provide middle school students access to current events magazines that covers all areas of the language arts curriculum.
- Global History CD Rom lesson set with DVDs: Billy Hoover at teacher at the Gulf County Adult School in Wewahitchka. This grant provides the Global history video series from the History channel for the Adult School.
Field Trips
- Something Fishy: Janice Adkison, a teacher at PSJES wrote this grant to provide funding for all the students in 4th grade a field trip to the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve in Eastpoint to learn about one of the most important estuarine systems in North America.
- The Wonderful World of Wakulla: Janice Adkison of PSJES wrote this grant to enable the 4th grade students to visit Wakulla Springs State Park, and see evidence of prehistoric life.
Performances & Shows
- Poetry Alive: Donna Thompson-PSJES, and Rhonda Pridgeon- WES. This grant will provide the funding for all students at PSJES and WES to see a live performance, and experience poetry more fully. The poems are presented in engaging and memorable ways, and they become the connection to enhanced reading and writing skills.
Prep Classes & Remedial
- Art with Math Fun: Sharon Hoffman a teacher at PSJES wrote this grant that gives 5th grade students an exciting opportunity to be exposed to visual arts and artists. This grant is designed to improve student achievement by presenting geometric concepts with hands on learning activities. Background information taught on various artists will also enrich and build knowledge for Mrs. Hoffman’s reading classes.
- The Real Deal: Becky Weston, a teacher at WES wrote this grant to implement a simulated banking project will the goal of improving her student’s math skills. The objective of the grant is to instill an appreciation and comprehension of our monetary system through wise decision making and good money management.
- Reading to Reality: Karen Odom a teacher at PSJES wrote this grant that will implement a project based reading program for the fourth grade at PSJES.
- Journey through Reading: Anita Askew, a teacher at WMS wrote this grant to provide reading experiences that are engaging, relevant and interesting while accommodating student's individual learning styles. Students will have the opportunity to work at learning centers, in small groups, and receive individual reading instruction with the support of the materials purchased by the grant.
- Unlocking the Reading Puzzle: Anita Askew of WMS won grant funding for this grant to help at-risk students increase their reading skills and to read at grade level. This grant will provide the Brain Pop interactive Web subscription, the Jamestown Fluency series, and more.
- Fanning the Flame for Reading: Carla Dunn, a teacher at WMS- wrote this grant to provide a quality classroom library for her classroom. Her goal is to purchase books that would support vocabulary growth and reading comprehension for her students.
2009-2010 Teaching and Learning Grants
Teaching Supplies
- Dolphin Discovery Lab improvements, this grant brought needed science materials to Port St. Joe’s Dolphin Discovery lab.
- Born to be Wild - was a grant written by the librarian to increase Port St. Joe Elementary’s Non-fiction books on animals.
- Learning through Primary Sources - this grant provided Jackdaws to a classroom. Jackdaws are exciting and relevant primary sources that bring history to life in the classroom, through the use of full size reproductions of actual letter, diaries, telegrams, newspapers, maps and photographs.
- Bridges’ classroom Library - This grant provided a classroom library for a Bridges’ classroom. The Bridges program is a varying exceptionality class with students of the most extreme disabilities. Students with autism, Cerebral Palsy, and emotionally handicapped students.
- Breaking down Barriers to Comprehension and Audio Support for Independent Reading provided an audio library for Wewahitchka Middle School.
- Technical and Not so Technical Reading provided a large array of reading materials to enhance and motivate students’ desire to read at Wewahitchka Middle and High School.
- American History Series CD-ROM Lesson Plan Set for the Adult School
- Grasping Physics through Graphing- The grant allowed Port St. Joe High School to purchase spark timers so they could analyze Kinematics.
- Graphing Calculators-this grant provided 11 graphing calculators for Port St. Joe High School.
Field Trips
- Wakulla Springs - The Study of a Natural Treasure, this grant provided a field trip to the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park for 96 students at Port St. Joe Elementary School
- Creatures from the Buck Lagoon, was a grant for students in the 4th and 5th grade to conduct scientific research at Buck Griffin Lake. Students collected data on the water quality, soil composition, plant life, and trash collected.
Performances & Shows
- Poetry Alive! In the Classroom, This grant brought a performance to both Gulf County Elementary School of the Poetry Alive professional performers. Every student at both school attended the performances. Performance Poetry techniques encourage struggling and/or emergent readers to break out of traditional methodologies and achieve improved literacy skills.
- Ready, Set, Action! Story Development through Storytelling-This grant affected every PSJ Elementary Student. The program involves a gifted storyteller performing stories that ignite the imagination and draw children into the excitement of the story. She performed classroom follow-up with all the 3rd and 4th grade students.
- Competitive Mathematics allowed a group of aspiring young mathematicians to compete against other high school students in math competitions.
Prep Classes & Remedial
- Leap into Reading - this grant provided 6th, 7th and 8th grade remedial students the necessary instructional tactics for learning Phonics, Sight Phrases, and improving reading fluency.
- Ride the Wave to Study Island-provided 7th and 8th graders web-based standards mastery program designed to help prepare students for the FCAT test.
- Communication for a Lifetime- provided a new keyboarding skills program for Wewahitchka High School.
- Abundant Life grant provided first graders an opportunity to learn about the life cycle of plants and animals native to our area.
2008-2009 Teaching and Learning Grants
Teaching Supplies
- Parent Partner Packs- purchase of 16 take home packs that include books, Manipulatives, journals, and write and wipe skill building cards, Purchase of laminated cards with Beginning and Higher level sight words on them and Word Family Flip Books.
- Engaging Reading materials for the High achieving Young learner-grant provides engaging and interesting reading materials through use of chapter books and academic magazines.
- Reaching all Learners (Differentiated Instruction) with this grant a set of Readers Theater, 2 sets of Literature Circle Text, and materials for a reading center were purchased for a classroom.
- Picture Communication Symbols adapted materials- A bundle of 18 interactive storybooks and weekly readers were purchased with this grant for ESE students.
- Vocabulary and Reading across the Curriculum – This grant provided WMS will vocabulary cartoons, Biographies of the 20th Century, Life of ……Series, and other literary works.
- Becoming an Ethical Researcher: Write Right! - With this grant the librarian at WHS purchased APA and MLA style research handbooks, and a site license to Turnitin.com, and Noodlebib.com.
Field Trips
- Go Jump in the Lake-The grant provided students at PSJES to conduct research, track and interpret data, and identify changes to the ecosystem and water quality of Buck Griffin Lake in PSJ. Students conducted experiments and did field studies with scientist, and engineering firms.
Performances & Shows
- Poetry Alive-This grant provided for a high-energy assembly show that is presented by a team of two professional performers. The show includes 20-25 poems tailored to fit the ages and interest of the audience. Performance poetry techniques encourage struggling and /or emergent readers to break out of traditional methodologies and achieve improved literacy skills.
Prep Classes & Remedial
- Mastering Math, -purchase of Marilyn Burn’s program where students learn and master math skills in a small group center, or in the whole class setting. Enhances current math programs by including literature and manipulatives to help students learn the basic skills of multiplication, division, and fractions.
Specific Need Grants for each school
- Purchasing a Data Keeping Program for Positive Behavioral Support called Swiss at WMS, and providing Breakfast during the FCAT
- Purchased Materials for WHS Science Lab
- Math Manipulatives through Fence Art- we purchased tiles that students can place in geometric shapes on the fence around PJSES. Math strategies will be explored through a kinesthetic process of beautifying the school.
- Air Flight Station was purchased for PSJMS, students will learn the history and principles of flight and explore career opportunies in the field of aviation. They will design, construct and fly model gilders.

- A grant approved for the continuation of PSJES Science Lab Grant for investigating the concept of energy.
- Super Science Experiences grant provided PSJMS with Physical Science Sets and Equipment
- A grant for a reading center for Struggling 1st grade readers was funded for rhyming games, letter cards, word cards, and other reading materials.
- Purchase a $1000 worth of Caldecott Medal Award winner books for the PSJES library.
- A grant for Writing with Literacy Centers was granted for a new 1st grade teacher at PSJES which provided hands on writing and literacy materials.
- Technology comes to Pre-K provided computer programming software for early learners.
- Let’s Explore provided funding for Materials and equipment Science lab for WES.
- Gator-Wide Scientific Innovation Lab provided funding for equipment and materials for a science lab at WHS.
- Teaching in Their Technological World provided a continuation for a previous grant for the Quizdom Q4 Interact software for WMS. The Quizdom system allows all the students in a classroom to compete against each other answering questions provided by an instructor. The system works like a game, and students are excited about trying to achieve the correct answer first.
- PSJMS learned of the success of the Quizdom program from WMS, and wrote a grant to have the Quizdom system included at their school. The Education Foundation is very proud to have provided the funding for both of these programs, and their continuation.
- We purchased new Head Sets at PJSMS.
- Catch the Reading Bug and Reading Excavation purchased books, dictionaries, Atlases, Almanacs and Thesauruses for a classroom Library.
- Turning the pages of your Imaginations purchases books and accelerated reading test for 7th and 8th grade students at WMS.
- Middle School Storytellers was a grant for costumes, copies of short stories and literature books, and a Storytelling in Literature guide, and supplies for WMS.
- We purchased Recorded books for WHS.
- We improved classroom libraries in 4 additional classrooms.

- Renewing a love for reading was a grant for books, and magazine subscriptions at PSJHS.
- Living History was a grant for purchasing period costumes, and high-interest historical fiction for book talks related to history.
- Opening Little Minds, One page at a time provided for a science lab in the Preschool, Kindergarten library at PSJES.
- Poetry Alive was granted for both PSJES, and WES.
Field Trips
- Ignite the Imagination IV, this grant was approved 4 times by the Education Foundation, it consisted of lessons in Flight, the basic mathematical and scientific principles of flight, and how it has impacted our global society. Students made rockets, and then shot the rockets off. The students also went on a field trip to the Challenger Center located in Tallahassee.
- This Planet really rocks granted funding for a hands on approach to Geology, and a trip to the Florida Caverns Sate Park in Marianna for all 5th graders at PSJES.
- Finding Florida, a grant that provided a field trip to Apalachicola Research Reserve Center and the St. George Island State Park for all PSJES 4th graders.
- A step in the Write Direction was a grant to fund a Poetry Writing/Reading supplemental program for all students at PSJES. It provided materials, lessons, and a poetry writing workshop with an engaging educator and storyteller Pat Nease.

- The Three R’s provided literacy, reading, writing and arithmetic in small group centers for WES.
